TO BE HOME

Our Company

TO BE HOME is the first dedicated design and development company that focuses on the unique needs of the empty nester, the retiree, and those who want to activate their later years and who expect more from the golden years.

Our mission is to place control of the retirement years back into the hands of the individual.

Our Inspiration

TO BE HOME was inspired by witnessing the positive approach to life, the increased engagement and agency my parents gained by creating them a home that gave them the independence they deserved in their retirement years. If it can improve the lifestyle of one couple then everyone should have access to the same positive future.

TO BE HOME was created after my parents, who were in their 60’s at the time,  investigated the options for their future housing.  ‘Retirement’ was imminent and they, like many, were disillusioned with the state of the retirement industry, the lifestyle compromises and the significant financial burden they faced if they followed the traditional path of downsizing to an apartment building, retirement village or the inevitable care-home. All of these options presented a substandard future.

They wanted more and they deserved more.

We came up with three goals for a new house for their ‘empty nesting’ years:

  1. Improve lifestyle and happiness
  2. Adaptability to meet future challenges
  3. Accessibility to family and existing social networks

Over the following 18months the first TO BE HOME was designed and built. The most fascinating outcome of the process was the strength and vitality it gave my parents.

Gone was the ‘worry of aging’ and the stress of a future in aged care, this was swept away with a feeling of positivity and agency over their lives, their future was now back in their hands.

Their new home unlocked a more social future, not only for family but also friends - and with that came a steady stream of people who were in the same boat who asked ‘can you build one for me’?

And TO BE HOME was born.

Entering their 60’s my parents investigated their ‘retirement’ housing options and were disillusioned at the substandard housing stock and the costly retiree & aged care industry. Every option was a compromise, nothing in the market provided any long term lifestyle of financial benefit. They wanted more and they deserved more.

Gone was the ‘worry of ageing’ and the stress of a future in aged care, this was swept away with a feeling of positivity and agency over their lives, their future was now back in their hands. Their new home unlocked a more mobile and social future, more time for family, friends and travel.

TO BE HOME was born.
